Can 2GB RAM Phones Still Work in 2026? The Truth
Short answer: Yes, but only if you know what you’re buying. 2GB RAM in 2026 is like driving a Keke on the express — it moves, but don’t try to overtake.
I used 3 cheap 2GB phones for 1 month each as my only phone. Here’s what still works and what will frustrate you.
1. Tecno Pop 8 - ₦72,000
Specs: 2GB RAM + 2GB extended, 64GB storage, Android 13 Go, 5000mAh.
Works for: WhatsApp, calls, Facebook Lite, Opay, Chrome with 2 tabs. YouTube at 480p is smooth. Battery lasts 2 days because the chip is slow.
Dies if you try: TikTok, COD Mobile, switching between WhatsApp + Camera + Chrome. It reloads everything. Instagram reels lag badly.
Who should buy: First phone for your mum, secondary phone for POS, or if ₦72k is your max budget.
2. itel A70 - ₦65,000
Specs: 2GB RAM + 3GB extended, 64GB, Android 13 Go, 5000mAh.
Works for: Same as Tecno Pop 8, but itel’s “memory fusion” is better. Apps stay open longer. Screen is brighter outdoors.
Dies if you try: Any game above Candy Crush. Camera takes 3 seconds to open. Google Maps navigation freezes.
Who should buy: If you see Pop 8 and A70 at same price, pick A70. That extra 1GB extended RAM helps.
3. Infinix Smart 8 - ₦78,000
Specs: 2GB RAM + 2GB extended, 64GB, Android 13 Go, 5000mAh, 90Hz screen.
Works for: Scrolling feels smoother because of 90Hz. That’s the only win. Everything else same as Tecno.
Dies if you try: 90Hz + 2GB RAM = phone gets hot fast. Battery drops 15% in 20min of Facebook. Turn it back to 60Hz.
Who should buy: Nobody. Pay ₦6k less for itel A70 and get better battery life.
Rules for surviving on 2GB RAM in 2026
1. Use Go/Lite apps: Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite, YouTube Go. Normal apps will kill it.
2. 1 app at a time: Close WhatsApp before opening Camera. Android 13 Go doesn’t multitask well.
3. Turn off animations: Settings → Accessibility → Remove animations. Phone feels 30% faster.
4. Restart every 3 days: Clears RAM. If your phone starts lagging, restart solves it.
5. Don’t update apps: New WhatsApp updates use more RAM. If it works, disable auto-update in Play Store.
Should you buy 2GB in 2026?
Buy if: Budget is under ₦75k and you only need calls, WhatsApp, and Opay. It’s better than no phone.
Don’t buy if: You can save ₦20k more. ₦95k gets you Tecno Spark 20 with 4GB RAM. That phone will last 3 years. 2GB phones will frustrate you by December.
